Background Information

The OSCE Support Programme for Ukraine (SPU) has been established in order to continue to support the Ukrainian Government’s reform efforts and to mitigate the increased risks to civilians caused by the war against the country. The objective of the OSCE SPU - and therefore of all its projects - is to support Ukraine across all three OSCE dimensions on the government’s reform efforts and on the evolving risks to civilians caused by the war, thus ensuring that the OSCE’s work conducted over the past three decades and in the future, continues to impact positively on the institutions and people of Ukraine and that Ukraine’s comprehensive security is enhanced in line with the OSCE commitments.

To support project activities, the OSCE SPU requires services of English/Ukrainian translators/interpreters. Specialty/expertise in the following terminology would be a significant asset:

  • military / mine action / humanitarian demining;
  • CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) safety and security;
  • cyber security;
  • emergency response and disaster management;
  • general medicine / emergency first aid;
  • psychological and social assistance;
  • civil protection / defence;
  • financial monitoring / anti-money laundering.

Please note that this is a vacancy notice to enlarge the OSCE SPU roster of consultants. Successful candidates with relevant skills and qualifications will be included into the database with the possibility of being contacted, when services required. These will be short-term translation assignments for a period of several days. The Translator/Interpreter will be required to work from home or at the meeting venues (in Kyiv or other locations), if necessary.

Tasks

Under the supervision of the OSCE SPU staff, the identified language specialists will perform the following tasks:

  • Provide consecutive and/or simultaneous English/Ukrainian and/or Ukrainian/English interpretation during bilateral meetings and the OSCE SPU project activities, such as training sessions, seminars, workshops, conferences, and roundtables.
  • Provide written translation of project- and training-related documents and other required materials from English into Ukrainian and vice versa.

Necessary Qualifications

  • University degree in philology, translation/interpretation (English/Ukrainian); an advanced degree would be an asset.
  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in the field of translation/interpretation (English/Ukrainian).
  • Professional knowledge of English and Ukrainian languages.
  • Proven translation/interpretation experience in one of / several thematic fields indicated in the opening background information.
  • Excellent communication and drafting skills.
  • Certificate or document of conference accredited interpreter or any similar professional certification would be an asset.
  • Previous experience with OSCE or international organizations would be an asset.
  • Computer literacy with practical experience using Microsoft applications.
  • Demonstrated gender awareness and sensitivity, and an ability to integrate a gender perspective into tasks and activities.
  • Ability and willingness to work as a member of a team, with people of different cultural and religious backgrounds, different gender, and diverse political views, while maintaining impartiality and objectivity.

Remuneration

Remuneration will be paid in accordance with the OSCE Support Programme for Ukraine established consultancy rates. Applicants are encouraged to include in their applications their financial proposals for the foreseen services.
