Background:
The OSCE Mission in Kosovo focuses on institution- and democracy-building, human rights, and rule of law. It works in areas such as human rights protection, good governance, gender equality, civic participation, training of public officials and police, and project co-ordination.
The selected intern will assist the Mission’s programmatic departments, helping with project activities, report development, and analysis. This role offers the chance to learn about the Mission’s work in institution-building, democracy assistance, and human rights, while developing skills in legal drafting and analysis.
During the 6-month assignment, the intern will support project activities related to the below two departments. The intern will also participate in meetings with stakeholders, gaining practical experience in a multi-institutional environment.
Internships are available within the following departments:
Department of Human Rights and Communities
- Department of Security and Public Safety
This internship will provide an opportunity for selected candidates to gain practical experience in an international and multicultural environment while developing their professional skills and understanding of the OSCE’s mandate and activities in Kosovo.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
Interns will be assigned to specific departments and projects, including:
Department of Human Rights and Communities (DHRC):
DHRC - Communities Section (location: Prishtine/Pristina and Regional Center Peje/Pec)
- Assisting in implementing activities; scheduling, maintaining records, and organizing meetings, workshops, or events;
- Conduct research on community needs, relevant policies, and best practices, and prepare concise summary reports to support project planning and implementation;
- Contribute to the development of materials, including presentations and social media posts, to promote the initiatives and activities of the Communities Section;
Support the analysis of specific actions within the Communities Section’s portfolios, utilizing tracking tools to identify trends and draw comparisons;
- Participating in field monitoring activities and providing support with liaising and outreaching to non-majority communities, community representatives and civil society organizations;
- Assisting in the collection of information, monitoring and reporting;
- Providing administrative and logistical support and translation/interpretation on ad hoc basis.
DHRC - Law and Justice Section (LJS) (location: Regional Centre Peje/Pec):
- Support LJS trial monitoring activities by assisting in the collection and organization of case documents (hearing records, verdicts, and related materials) and preparing summaries for internal use;
- Contribute to the preparation of weekly reports and activity briefs, under guidance from the Senior Legal Officer;
- Assist in planning, logistical preparation, and follow-up of Regional Centre Peje/Pec (RC PE) programmatic activities (e.g., workshops, roundtables, quick-impact initiatives);
- Support outreach and liaison with judicial stakeholders by taking notes during meetings and preparing summaries for internal circulation;
- Provide translation and interpretation support for meetings and documents, as needed;
- Complete a capstone project aligned with RC PE LJS priorities (e.g., research on trial monitoring trends, analysis of fair trial practices, or drafting a procedural briefing), with guidance from the supervisor;
- Contribute to administrative and operational tasks, including filing, media monitoring, and coordination of team activities.
Department of Security and Public Safety (DSPS) (location: Prishtine/Pristina and/or Vushtrri/Vucitrn):
- Gain an overview of the work of OMiK and DSPS;
- Get practical experience through rotational assignments across DSPS sections;
- Support planning, coordination, and implementation of activities;
- Assist with administrative, operational, and logistical tasks, including events and meetings;
- Contribute to ongoing programs, initiatives, and research-related tasks;
- Conduct research on security policies and best practices;
- Participate in meetings, trainings, and other learning activities as assigned.
Necessary Qualifications:
- Be not older than 30 years on the date of the deadline of the vacancy notice and have completed two years of full-time post-secondary education in an accredited institution or have completed a first or advanced degree in a field relevant to the OSCE’s mandate, such as university education in international relations, political science, law, human rights, security studies or other relevant subjects no longer than two years before the date of the deadline of the vacancy notice.
- Have permanent residence status in the duty station where the internship is located.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and one of the official local languages. Knowledge of other local languages is an asset.
- Knowledge of international human rights standards, as well as the applicable legal framework in Kosovo.
- Strong research and analytical abilities.
- Demonstrable communication and drafting skills.
- Good organizational and administrative skills.
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment and demonstrate initiative.
- Basic understanding of gender mainstreaming principles.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and internet applications.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Previous work experience or internships in a relevant field.
Experience working in a multilateral/multicultural environment.
The internship will be guided by a programme of work agreed between the intern and the supervisor at the start of the assignment, outlining day-to-day responsibilities and specific learning objectives. As part of this plan, the intern will complete a final project a research paper, analytical report, activity or other tangible output that demonstrates the intern’s contribution. The intern will present the key findings and lessons learned to a Mission panel at the end of the internship, as part of the overall learning and evaluation process.
Remuneration and Benefits:
- In lieu of remuneration the OSCE Mission in Kosovo will contribute towards the cost of living of National Interns who are non-residents at the duty station (place of assignment), such compensation is equivalent to 10% of the applicable BLA rate.
- Social benefits will include participation in the Cigna health insurance scheme.
- The internship does not constitute a commitment to future employment with the OSCE.
